Genesee Baseball pitcher and shortstop Austen Jones is a natural

GENESEE, ID - After not having a team last year, the 2014 Genesee Baseball team is headed to the state tournament, and their ace pitcher and starting shortstop is a huge part of that.

However, most people don't know that their ace also wants to be a criminal investigator or narcotics officer. Let's meet this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week" Genesee High Junior, Austen Jones.

Genesee's Austen Jones, or the natural as he's called, has a close relationship with his teammates on the diamond.

"Once you get onto the baseball field it's a whole other level of friendship basically," said Jones.

It makes playing and winning that much more simple.

"Helps a lot to like and be friends with everyone on the team," said Jones. "It makes cheering a lot easier, it makes working hard with people a lot easier."

As focused as he is on pitching and playing shortstop, he's just as focused in the classroom.

"I'm doing pretty good this year," said Jones. "I've got a couple pretty tough classes but it's a lot of hard work still."

And just like many small town kids, his free time mostly consists of more sports.

"We come down here after school and we're here till 7:00... 7:30," said Jones.

Austen wants to continue his baseball career in college, but doesn't have a solid destination quite yet.

"I always thought L-C would be a great place to play, but I kinda have always wanted to go some place further away or a little bit bigger, just to kinda get a new experience," said Jones.

And no matter where he goes, the plan right now is to study law enforcement and criminal justice.

"I want to be a criminal investigator or narcotics detective," said Jones. "Ever since I was young I remember wanting to be a cop. Once I got older I just thought that that was just kind of a young kid kinda dream but it really stuck a lot more than I thought it would."

His heroes are all in the family.

"I'd have to say my dad and my two biggest people that have influenced me," said Jones. "They still continue to influence me."

And we thank Austen Jones for helping influence our youth in a positive way, a big reason why he's this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week."

"That's awesome, I mean I've voted a lot for some kids from our school," said Jones. "It's cool, I mean I didn't see it coming but that's awesome."

We hope you enjoyed meeting Austen Jones. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you'd like to nominate, just go to klewtv, com, click on sports and then prep athlete.
Every Wednesday those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
