Remember when you were a child and you wanted to try out baseball or football or basketball? Clarkston High sophomore Kira Loughran started ice skating at a young age for a different reason.
"Well I was actually a really hyper kid when I was younger and got kicked out of everything because I couldn't sit still," said Loughran.
But as soon as she got out there and realized how good she could be, it became a passion.
"I click with it, I guess," said Loughran. "It's something I'm good at and like to do."
She and the ice rink have been together since she was four years-old.
"I've like spent my whole life at the ice rink so it's like a second home really," said Loughran.
And at only 15-years-old, she's already accomplished so much!
"I've gotten two medals from the USFSA, I have competed over in Belgium for the us and ended up fourth out of 36 countries," said Loughran.
And though she has high hopes of making an Olympic run someday, she also wants to combine her skating with education.
"If it could get me a scholarship into college that would be really nice," said Loughran.
And speaking of school, based on the amount of time she spent on the ice, she's been home schooled since fifth grade up to this year, her first year back at a public school in five years!
"Well the first day I was very overwhelmed, there was so many people, I was just like whoa, but everyone here is super nice and I love it," said Loughran. "And all the teachers are great and I'm really happy with my choice to go to this school."
Her and her family just arrived in the valley seven months ago, and Kira almost gave up skating all together.
"When I first got here going to school I was kind of on the verge of do I want to skate," said Loughran. "Do I not want to skate and I took about four months off and then I said that's it I have to skate, I have nothing to do with myself."
In her free time?
"I stretch, and I play with my dogs, I ride my horse, I watch TV," said Loughran.
And she has a hero that has helped her out the entire way.
"My mom," said Loughran. "She's always been there for me, is independent, inspires me."
