For a kid whose basically leading his football team in every statistical category there is, and I mean a kid who can throw for 300 plus yards, run the ball for several scores, lead his team in tackles, and return an interception for a touchdown all in one game, Colton High senior Jake Straughan sure is humble.
"Yeah, I'm having a good year but I couldn't do it without my teammates and without my coaches," said Straughan.
He's a player that any coach would be lucky to have on his team, and Colton Head Football Coach, Clark Vining is the lucky coach that gets him.
"Well he's a tremendous athlete, good student," said Vining. "He's a guy that just gets better and better, every time he goes out on the field at quarterback. You know it's fun to watch cause you know something great's gonna' happen every Friday night, you're just not sure what it might be."
But as good as Jake is at football, he's also a star baseball player. But really sticks out on the court playing basketball where, when he was a junior, committed to playing for the University of Idaho under Don Verlin. So has coach Petrino come knocking yet?
"I haven't really talked to him," said Straughan. "I mean, I don't know if they really know who I am yet cause I haven't been on campus. But no right now it's just basketball, that's my sport. I do love football and baseball but basketball is my number one sport."
Fair enough...how's life in the classroom?
"Really good, I've got a 4.0 for this quarter," said Straughan. "So I'm keeping up on all my classroom stuff so yeah, good."
"History, I actually do like math," said Straughan.
And though he has time to figure out what he wants to major in, history could be in the mix.
"Not really sure yet," said Straughan. "I wanna be a coach when I get older obviously and I like teaching to. Maybe a major in history or something like that but I'm not positive."
Let's talk about heroes.
"My number one hero would be my dad," said Straughan. "I mean, he's gone through everything in life and for him to be where he is now with all the hard work is something I definitely look up to."
We gotta give it up for this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week," Colton High senior Jake Straughan.
"It means a lot, I mean I'm very honored," said Straughan. "Not a lot of kids get this opportunity and I really want to thank those people who recognize what I do on and off the field."
We hope you enjoyed meeting Jake Straughan. Each week throughout this school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area.
