LC-State commit, Hansen, is P1FCU Prep Athlete of Week

In the game of golf, rarely do you talk about winning streaks but for this week’s P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week” we’ve made an exception for him.

Clarkston Bantam linksman Travis Hansen has won each of the last two golf meets he’s participated in and for his efforts, he’s been named this week’s P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week.”

The last three seasons, basketball star turned golf star Travis Hansen hasn’t gotten off to real impressive starts, but when the Bantams were bounced from the state playoffs early he knew what he had to do to fix that.

"Uh mostly my irons,” said Hansen. “I started taking lessons with Drew Reinland the head coach at LC and he's gotten me a long ways so mostly my irons and just getting more power so I can hit the ball further."

Travis, who was one of the most reliable shooters on the Bantam basketball team, explains why it’s golf that he enjoys more than hoops.

"Pretty much it's just you, against you,” said Hansen. “I mean you can be your worst enemy but you have to have positive self-talk. In basketball, you make a mistake you've got to get right back on defense, but golf you get to walk 150 yards and think of the things you did wrong and take the plus' out of it."

Travis who will attend LCSC to play golf next spring says he emulates the game’s best to perfect his game as a golfer.

"In my short game I like to try to do things like Phil did,” said Hansen. “Sometimes he'd get in trouble and he'd have good recovery saves. And also, probably like a lot of people, Tiger Woods, just the way he dominated."

The senior who’s only registered top two finishes in his four events this year says there will be no limit he sets on his game.

"This year, going into state, I'd like to win State,” said Hansen. “And then when I get to LCSC, I want to try to become one of the better players at LC and if I'm there for two years or I'm there for four years just try to keep taking my game to the next level and not really put a limit on my game to see how good I can get."

We hope you enjoyed meeting Travis this evening. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you’d like to nominate you can shoot me an email at zsimonar@klewtv.com and we’ll showcase those athletes right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
