LHS Cheers' Soderberg named P1FCU Prep Athlete

With prep sports scene gone silent, this week we’ve decided to step out of the box and honor a non-traditional sport that often gets overlooked. The Lewiston Cheer Team will soon head off to Boise to compete in state, and the backbone of the Bengal Cheer Team’s success has been highlighted by this week’s P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week,” Sydnee Soderberg.

Sydnee Soderberg has been cheering her heart out ever since junior high, but the senior who puts over 20 hours per week into her craft says the work never ends.

"Definitely going to tumbling quite a bit, and attending open gyms when I can,” said Soderberg.

The Beetles fan and record collector has attended cheer clinics at WSU, Idaho, Grand Canyon University and others, will soon compete in the biggest tryout of her career.

"Here in April I'm going to be trying out for UCA because I got apped at camp,” said Soderberg. “They wanted to recruit me to try out for them."

But her tryout for the Universal Cheer Association won’t be her only April tryout.

"I plan on attending Boise State University, their cheer team is so wonderful, and so I'm going to be trying out for them so I'm hoping to be able to make it and cheer alongside with them,” said Soderberg.

There Sydnee will complete her bachelor’s degree in marketing, but the high-flyer whose favorite stunt is the basket toss wishes every season was football season.

"I love cheering on the football team at the game,” said Soderberg. “It's just the game day atmosphere that I really enjoy. And it's being able to cheer on our team in front of all our classmates, it's just really fun."

Sydnee whose most fond memory was cheering in the London New Year’s Day Parade is also active outside of cheer. She is part of DECA, LHS Leadership and the school year book and she’ll take the skills she learned there and apply them as she looks to take the next step in her cheer career.

"From DECA I've definitely learned a lot of business skills that I otherwise wouldn't have learned,” said Soderberg. “From LHS Leadership I've learned some great qualities like how to be an efficient leader which has really helped in cheer and basically everything else I've done."

We hope you enjoyed meeting Sydnee this evening. Each week throughout the school year, KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you’d like to nominate, you can shoot me an email at zsimonar@klewtv.com and we’ll showcase those athletes right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
