Moscow's Couch named P1FCU Prep Athlete of the Week

Last year the Moscow Bears Wrestling team made a trip to the Idaho State Wrestling Tournament. With that experience under their belt, the Bears have taken off in 2016 behind their senior leader Caleb Couch. Today we honor him as this week’s P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week.”

"It's been a roller coaster,” said Caleb. “I mean I've had four coaches in four years and very different atmosphere in here from my freshman year to now."

There’s no need to sugarcoat it. The Moscow Wrestling Program has been a bit of a mess over the years. But the Bears who have turned the tide have guys like Caleb Couch to thank. Caleb has gotten off to a 13-2 start despite wrestling up anywhere from ten-15 pounds above his weight class.

"I know that I'm not the biggest guy out there on the mat,” said Caleb. “I know that I'm not the strongest out there on the mat. I get out there and my mindset is, you just got to compete. Be the first one to start throwing people around and make stuff happen."

Caleb, who plans to start his college education at the University of Idaho, loves to spend his free time giving back graciously to the community.

"Just a lot of stuff, volunteering with my church, and I partake in the buddy club at the high school where you partner with some of the kids with disabilities and we work with them and I love that,” said Caleb.

Caleb, who was born in Coeur D’Alene before moving to Moscow in third grade, has his dad who doubles as one of his wrestling coaches to thank for his success on the mat.

"In my opinion it's cool to have a father who's so involved,” said Caleb. “He's always out asking me what I need for the tournament and I never have to worry about that stuff."

Caleb says he is proud of his honor as “Prep Athlete of the Week” and realizes that awards like this don’t come easily.

"I'm proud to be a Moscow wrestler,” said Caleb. “I wouldn't want to wrestle for anybody else. I don't know if that's been true in the past. In the past I've been questioned whether or not to even come back out but I'm proud to be here and part of the program."

We hope you enjoyed meeting Caleb this evening. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you’d like to nominate just go to, click on sports and then prep athlete. Every Wednesday, those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
