P1FCU Prep Athlete hopes to be first astronaut on Mars
POTLATCH, ID —
This week’s P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week” has been through the ups and downs unlike many could ever imagine. From dead last in the White Pine League a year ago, to just a couple of wins away from state this year. We meet the man who has a lot to do with the Loggers resurgence. It’s time to meet Potlatch Logger Point Guard, Devin Richards.
"Going from one win to 14 wins this year, everyone knew that the elite coaching staff that was coming in this year were winners,” said Richards.
Potlatch boys’ basketball had been used to losing. They didn’t know what winning was and being an after-thought in the White Pine League by many, made things even more challenging.
"Since my freshman year we haven't been a winning team,” said Richards. “The expectations of Potlatch were kind of low. Everyone just thought of us as a mediocre team, if that."
Devin gives much of the credit to his coaching staff for the team’s turnaround but as a four-year varsity letter winner, he felt he was responsible for helping turn this team around.
"I lead by example, so in practice I'll do things by working hard,” said Richards. “Just subtly not getting on people's cases and I think the guys picked up on that really well."
Devin says his growing love for the game of basketball has recently came via the emergence of the Golden State Warriors and one of their many stars he models his game after.
"I'd say Steph Curry because he has a cool story behind him and it's a story that everyone can relate to in a way,” said Richards. “Being from a small school, being underrated like our team being 1-20 last year."
Devin, who also enjoys giving back to his community, helping build an outdoor basketball court for the town of Potlatch. But when he grows old, Devin would love to become an astronaut.
"After high school I want to go to U-of-I and study engineering and then later on become one of the first people on Mars,” said Richards.
Devin recently took a trip to NASA Ames over the summer where he got to meet some of his idols.
"I talked with the NASA Ames Director of that facility actually and he offered some awesome advice,” said Richards. “He said just go for your dreams and surround yourself with people who have similar goals in mind."
We hope you enjoyed meeting Devin this evening. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you’d like to nominate you can shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll showcase those athletes right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
