Wednesday we look back at two former award winners who not only happen to be friends but also happen to be the only two athletes in the Quad-Cities area to get full scholarships to the University of Idaho.
P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week" special focuses on two amazing young men as they venture off to college...Colton High's Jake Straughan and Pullman's David Ungerer.
Colton's Jake Straughan and Pullman's David Ungerer aren't geographically too far apart, but we still wanna know how they know each other.
"Summer basketball I got to see him play and then last year we actually got to play on the same team for a little bit and that's when we got to know each other," said Straughan.
"He had been playing with the heat for awhile and I came down kinda to try out," said Ungerer. "And we went at it that day back and forth, but besides that we just have been able to play with each other which was pretty cool?"
They see a lot in each other athletically.
"He's fun to watch," said Straughan. "Some of the stuff he does is unreal. I like some of the things he does, I like to say wow he can do that, I'd like to do that too."
"I mean he's deserved ever accolade he's gotten so I really have much respect for Jake and his athleticism," said Ungerer.
Two small town kids, two big athletic dreams as Vandals. So why Idaho?
"It was the perfect fit for me," said Straughan. "When I went over there to play the first couple times, it's like it really clicked. I really liked the players, the coaches, I really liked being around. It wasn't because it was close, a lot of people said that because you don't want to go far away from home but it wasn't like that at all. I would go play for Idaho even if it was 3,000 miles away."
"They want me there, I feel like I'm gonna be a big part of the team which is nice," said Ungerer. "You always want to feel wanted by a coach staff, especially Coach Petrino's staff."
Though Jake will continue his basketball career and David football, they both excel at the others sport. would they ever consider playing both?
"I haven't talked to Petrino at all and would never think of playing football," said Straughan.
"If Coach Verlin wants to give me a call, it'd be more than welcome," said Ungerer. "I'd love to play with Jake again but we'd have to see how I feel after a football season."
Despite playing different sports, these two friends will see each other quite a bit.
"Oh yeah, we'll be hanging out all the time," said Straughan. "I'll be at my dorm, he'll be at his. We're gonna be pretty tight in college, I can tell. Yeah, no doubt."
Keep an eye out for these two P1FCU prep athletes in the near future, two small town kids making big waves for Idaho!
"Go Vandals!" said David and Jake.
