UMass-Lowell commit, Naccarato named P1FCU Prep Athlete

This week’s P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week” dropped 34 points in stunning fashion against the Lewiston Bengals a night ago to up his season scoring average to 21 points per game. As one of the most physical guards in the area, Joey Naccarato has molded himself into a Division I caliber basketball player, and this week he’s been named the P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week.”

The Coeur d’Alene Vikings have got a playmaker that they quite simply haven’t had in recent memory. Joey Naccarato averages 21 points and eight rebounds per game and the scary thing for his opponents is he’s only getting better.

"You can always get better at ball handling and shooting, those two things I've kind of been focusing on,” said Naccarato. “Kind of trying to make a transition to more of a wing style player but also trying to become as versatile as I can, playing every position."

Joey is nearly set to embark on a life changing journey. The senior recently committed to play Division I basketball for the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks who play in the American East Conference. But the main question is how does an Idaho boy land in the greater Boston area?

"Well I did the AAU circuit, like doing the showcase tournaments in Seattle, LA, and Vegas and they saw me at the Best of Summer Tournament in LA and then just kind of built a relationship from there,” said Naccarato.

The lover of Italian food says he’s excited for the opportunity to grow both on and off the court.

"Yeah well just a whole different culture from back here and kind of going back East everything is a little more aged and also basketball is just a completely different breed back there. I think it's gonna be a really cool experience for me."

Joey, who also plays football during the fall, says being honored as this week’s “Prep Athlete of the Week” is something he won’t take for granted.

"I'm just really humbled and blessed by it cuz not everyone gets this kind of stuff so I just try to enjoy it while I have the chance to and just keep doing what I do I guess,” said Naccarato.

We hope you enjoyed meeting Joey this evening. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you’d like to nominate just go to klewtv.com, click on sports and then prep athlete. Every Wednesday those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
