Sounders complete turnaround with MLS Cup title
ONTARIO, CANADA —
In one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Major League Soccer history the Seattle Sounders claimed their first MLS Cup after defeating Toronto F.C. 5-4 in a penalty shootout. 120 minutes of play wasn’t enough for the Sounders and the Reds who played to a scoreless tie on a frigid night in Ontario.
Toronto took control of pace of play early but could never push one across Roman Torres goal in the penalty shootout gave the Sounders their first crown on what had been a whirlwind of a season that saw its Head Coach Sigi Schmid fired mid-season. In their previous seven years, the Sounders had never made it to the MLS Cup title game let alone win the whole shebang.
