Longtime Asotin County Prosecutor Ben Nichols has died from injuries he sustained during a motorcycle crash on Friday, May 19, 2023.
According to the Asotin County Sheriff's Office, Nichols was riding his motorcycle on Critchfield Road. Around noon, he was just passing the Swallows Nest Road intersection when a Subaru SUV made a left hand turn onto Swallows Nest Road and they collided.
The driver of the Subaru, identified as Richard B. Hensley, 79, of Lewiston, was not hurt.
Nichols, 64, of Clarkston, was rushed to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Officials said he was airlifted to a higher-level trauma center in Spokane.
Less than two hours later, ACSO announced that he had passed away from his injuries.
The investigation remains active at this time.
Nichols started working at the Asotin County Prosecuting Attorney's Office as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney on December 1, 1993, when he was 35-years-old. He was appointed to Prosecutor in 2001 and has held that position ever since.
Nichols is also a U.S. Marine Veteran where he served as a machine gunner.
His is married to Asotin County Sheriff Detective Jackie Nichols.
