Avista crews save Lewiston home from major fire damage

LEWISTON, ID - An Avista Utilities crew is being credited Wednesday night for saving a house from burning down.

It happened in a neighborhood that lost power during Wednesday morning's strong wind.

Lewiston fire crews got to the home on 19th Street off of 11th Avenue within minutes, but by that time, an Avista Utilities crew beat them to it. The workers had already put the fire out. The time was around 9:30 Wednesday morning.

The renter, who did not want to speak on camera, said that the strong winds knocked out his power, so he used a propane lantern for light. However, he thought it was out when he left to run an errand. But it was still burning, and fell over and ignited his living room.

Across the street, the Avista crew working to restore power to the area saw the flames. They called 911 and sprang into action and knocked the fire down with portable fire extinguishers.

According to a press release issued by the Lewiston Fire Department, the rapid response by the Avista crews saved the structure from major damage.
