Centenarian Reflects Ahead of 102nd Birthday

New tonight out of Clarkston. What could you do with 100 years? If you’re anything like the woman in this next story, you’d live them.

KLEW News Reporter Shannon Moudy has her uplifting story.

I spent my morning chatting with Gertrude Stachofsky, as her and her family looked back on her life in preparation of a milestone birthday.

Gertrude Stachofsky is probably Evergreen Estate’s most popular resident right now.

"Well I guess I'm having a birthday,” said Gertrude.

But not just any birthday.

"I'm going to be 102,” said Gertrude.

Gertrude was born in Spokane in 1915. She’s lived throughout Washington, and a whole century of history.

"I learned to drive in a Model T,” said Gertrude.

She only gave up driving five years ago. She’s also a globetrotter.

Gertrude said, "Oh I like to travel and I've traveled a lot."

From being the only 82-year-old woman in an African village to smuggling bibles in China, Gertrude is full of laughable memories from her travels, including one about some interesting burgers she ate in the Philippines.

Gertrude said, "Couple of days later one of the guys asked me, 'Gertrude, do you know what you ate over there?' and I said, 'Hamburgers, I thought.' and he says, 'It was worms.' "

With 102 years in the rearview, Gertrude is spending her birthday month with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, reflecting on a life well-lived. And if you think she has a big secret to her longevity…

Gertrude said, "I don't have an answer for that. One day at a time, I guess. I don't think about it....I just keep a'goin."

Maybe the secret is a lot of this….

Gertrude tells me she’s actually the second oldest resident at Evergreen Estates. Wishing Gertrude a happy birthday with many more to come.
