P1FCU Prep Athlete Droegmiller doing it all for Highland hoops

His numbers don't jump off the page at you, but this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week" has been an instrumental piece for the Highland Huskies who in recent years have been irrelevant in the state of Idaho when it comes to boys' basketball. Let's meet the double-double machine himself, Craigmont's own Hunter Droegmiller.

Highland High School's Hunter Droegmiller is that of a different breed. He's one of those rare versatile players.

"I've had him as point guard," said Patty Weeks, Highland High Basketball Coach. "He's down low, he can be a wing."

The six-foot four senior who is a single sport athlete spent a ton of time in the weight room over the summer in an effort to prepare for the grueling schedule that the Huskies have faced to start the season.

"Just showing that commitment, a lot of the players really respect him for that," said Coach Weeks. "He's a quiet guy but he earns their respect."

Hunter who has his sights set on his future is in FAA where he is preparing himself for what he hopes is a prosperous life as a forester.

"In FFA I like to do forestry a lot," said Hunter. "I'm really good at it and I'm just trying to keep going cuz that's what I want to do as a future job."

Hunter who plans to attend the University of Idaho and intern with the Forestry Service has built his resume as he continues to prepare for the pending forestry competitions.

"I've gone to multiple competitions where I've led my team every year throughout the forestry competition and then the past two years in a row I've won the district level," said Hunter.

It's only fitting that the player Hunter looks up and models parts of his game after, has fought through knee issues just like Hunter has.

"I really like Kyrie Irving, and the one thing he's really good at is keeping open eyes on the court," said Hunter. "I've been working on that a lot to make sure my teammates get the ball when they're open."

We hope you enjoyed meeting Hunter this evening. Each week throughout the school year, KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you'd like to nominate, just go to click on sports and then prep athlete. Every Wednesday those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
