P1FCU Prep Athlete of the Week: Maddie Dixon
POMEROY, WA —
Pomeroy sophomore Maddie Dixon is a two-sport athlete.
She plays volleyball and basketball for the Pirates, but basketball is her first love.
“It kind of just lets everything go,” Dixon said. “You get to be with your friends, you get to do something I’ve loved for a long time.”
Like most teenagers, Dixon has multiple passions. Her second?
“My family raises cattle. So, I show steers,” she said. “I show at the Spokane Junior Livestock Show in the spring. And farm fair here. That’s my favorite thing to do.”
And she’s pretty good at it.
“I’ve won the Junior Livestock show six times and reserve one year,” she said while counting the amount of times she’s won on her fingers.
She says doing competitive things fuels the fire in her.
“In basketball, you’re competing for something and show steers you’re competing for something. So, I’m very competitive and I like to compete in all of that.”
The same spirit she had on Friday.
Her Pirates almost pulled the upset over the Colton Wildcats.
She’s ready for the rematch, learning from the last game.
“Knowing we have to come out as strong as we did in the first half in the second half,” she said.
